Do Baby Boomers Influence Technology?

Filed under: by Nancy at 2:10 am

Yes — according to technology industry analyst Tim Bajarin.

Admittedly, boomers aren’t the most tech-savvy group — that would be the 14-to-24-year-old set. But Boomers have a great deal of purchasing power (more purchasing power than any other demographic, in fact) and this is the source of their influence.

And what are they most interested in? Living long and healthy lives. Boomers are especially concerned about the cost of health care. Indeed, “they are three times more worried about a major illness, their ability to pay for health care, or winding up in a nursing home, than they are about dying.”

Hence, they will be spending large amounts of money on health care-related technology. For instance, they will be interested in buying personal health care devices such as defibrillators and heart monitors.

In anticipation of this demand, several tech companies have already started re-structuring to make health care technology a bigger part of their businesses.

And, though health is the major issue on their minds, boomers will also use technology in other ways, such as: to stay in touch with their loved ones, to learn more about their pastimes (e.g., quilting, fishing), and maybe even to do a bit of shopping.

Omni Hotel, Austin, Texas

Filed under: by leafworks at 10:35 pm

The Omni Hotel * 700 San Jacinto at 8th Street * Austin, Texas 78701 * Phone: (512) 476-3700, Fax: (512) 397-4888
* Omni Downtown homepage

An elegant riche hotel in the heart of downtown Austin in the famous Omniplex building. Within walking distance from the convention center, 6th street, Red River, and Austin’s famous nighttime activities. The staff was friendly and eager to please. But the hotel is definitely centered around those with money. They force a concessions deposit with the room in case you get late night munchies out of the bar-fridge in the room: tiny jar of cashews for $6.50, $4 for a small bag of potato chips, $2.50 for a snickers bar. Lets not even approach the cost to the liquor or room service. They are certainly out for your money in elegance of course! Extra costs for everything - you get more bang for your buck at the Holiday Inn. No free breakfast even though you’re paying in excess of $120/night. There is a gym, swimming pool, and hot tub on the roof. Rating: 3 stars out of 5.

When Dating, Protect 4 Things…

Filed under: by Nancy at 7:30 pm

Following up on a recent post about Boomer singles

The Olympian recently published an article by Tom Black that encouraged older singles to protect 4 key things while dating.

What were those 4 things?

  1. Your Heart

While loneliness is difficult, having one’s heart broken at our age is worse. Be careful where you allow your heart to lead you. Trust your instincts.

You may be longing for companionship, but this is no reason to let your guard down. If a person seems too good to be true, he/she probably is!

  2. Your Health

With the proliferation of male enhancement drugs like Viagra, Levitra and Cialis, some older men think they’re the king stud and expect sex like dessert after dinner. The danger of getting a STD exists among the older set. And it’s not just men who transmit STDs. Women also can be carriers. Both sexes need to be cautious.

The risk of getting HIV or AIDS is increasing among people over 50, so please don’t feel rushed when it comes to intimacy. Be safe and learn the facts.

  3. Your Drink

One woman had a couple of dates with a perfect gentleman. Then, he invited her to his house for dinner. After dining and nice conversation, she woke up nude at three in the morning in his bed. He had placed a date-rape drug in her wine glass. Not in a bar, not by a stranger, but by a man she trusted and enjoyed.

Yes, date rape can (and does) happen. Never let your drink — no matter what it is! — out of your site.

  4. Your Assets

Widows are particularly vulnerable. Many are lonely and their husbands might have made the financial decisions. Mr. Right comes along, gains a widow’s love and trust, and offers to help with finances. If that sounds familiar, have your new beau checked out by a private investigator.

Often, the Internet is used for these “sweetheart scams.” Don’t be fooled! Always stay in control of your money. Use your head (not your heart) when making important financial decisions.
