The Top Ten Baby Boomer Trends

Filed under: by Marsha James at 7:57 am

A new website called Baby Boomer Trips was created earlier this year and it was dedicated to helping seniors and baby boomers get traveling info. The owners get tons of emails and these are some examples:

1. Baby Boomers still love to find a good deal.

Baby boomers do not like being taken for granted. You’ve probably seen numerous reports regarding the monetary strength of the baby boomer generation. As a result, vacation packagers have mainly focused on high end luxury trips, with very little discounting. The baby boomers who have written in have said that they want great value for their special trips, but know when they are being taken advantage of.

2. Baby boomers are enjoying the attention.

We’ve received so many messages thanking us for putting together a resource for baby boomers. This goes against the popular theory that baby boomers are resentful of such websites. The majority of people we’ve chatted with are happy that they are being taken seriously, and that they have a place to go that is focused on their needs.

3. Baby boomers are anxious to chat with others about issues important to them.

We’ve found that baby boomers love message boards! They are very open to chatting with others in this type of format, and really like to meet friends of similar interests that they can reminisce or chat with. They also like to help others, which goes against the popular theory that baby boomers are selfish.

4. Baby boomers ARE tech savvy.

We’ve received countless emails from baby boomers that love to book travel at all hours of the night. They love the convenience of the Internet, and they love the adventure of trying to find great deals for higher end trips. A relatively high percentage had high speed Internet, and some had other devices such as Blackberrys. They are not opposed to taking on new technical challenges, as earlier generations may have been.

5. Baby boomers feel forever young.

Most boomers feel like this is the beginning of a wonderful period in their life. They are concerned about health challenges ahead, but don’t see deterioration as inevitable. We’ve talked with so many baby boomers that feel young, healthy, and vibrant.

6. Baby boomers feel that they still have a lot to offer.

We’ve talked to some baby boomers who can only think of retirement, but many others feel that now is their time to make a difference. Many are thinking of volunteering, working another job just for fun, staying on with their current employer if they’re happy, or even starting their own business. These entrepreneurs are anxious to take on projects that make a difference.

7. Baby boomers want to be treated well.

Let’s face it - you’ve worked your whole life, raised your children, and now is your time. A majority of the baby boomers we’ve heard from want to be treated well. They’re willing to pay for luxurious items, but again, they still have to be of relatively good value.

8. Baby boomers will pay for convenience.

While annoyed by ever-increasing fees and surcharges, the majority of baby boomers we heard from will generally pay them. This goes for ATM fees, and bottled water, just to name a few.

9. Boomers shy away from organized tours.

Annoyed by waiting in lines, and being on someone else’s schedule, the majority of baby boomers we heard from would like to stay far away from organized tours. They are independent people who want to explore on their own, or with friends who have similar interests.

10. Boomers like to take their time on vacation.

Walk Faster Lady!

Filed under: by Marsha James at 9:28 pm

Mayvis Coyle a 78 year old senior was shuffling across the street with her cane on Feb 15 and didn’t not make it across before the light changed from green to red. She then recieved a $114 ticket from a motorcycle Police Officer, who told her she was obstructing traffic.

Sgt. Mike Zaboski of the Valley Traffic Division said that the police were cutting down on pedestrian accidents and also said it was Coyle’s word against the police officer’s. Other people support the elderly woman, saying that the light just doesn’t give pedestrians enough time to cross before it changes in 20 seconds.

High School students even have trouble making it across in the 20 second period and have to run to make it. I would think that they would understand that a 78 year old woman with a cane, might have a little bit of a problem trying to “dash” across the street.

Baby Boomer Entrepreneur? There’s A Downside

Filed under: by Marsha James at 5:57 pm

Some baby boomers are thinking of starting their own business, namely consulting firms in which they could use their life and work experience to help others. One downside to this is that say some experts is that without that boomer running it, there is no way for someone else to buy the business and keep the money flowing. Another problem is most boomers don’t know much about selling, especially if they’ve spent much of their time in the corporate world.

Jeff Cornwall, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at Belmont University in Nashville says, “A consulting business is tied to the activity of the owner and has no residual value that someone will be able to buy. A business has value to a buyer if it creates ongoing cash flow into the future. If the boomer entrepreneur/consultant retires, the cash flow from his/her consulting activities ends. There seems to be a myth that entrepreneurship and self-employment are secret paths to wealth. If these Entre-Boomers didn’t prepare in their working years, they believe that they can start a business when they reach retirement age and it will magically create wealth. It just doesn’t work that way.”

Super 8 Hotel
18600 E. 63rd Ave, Denver, CO 80249
303-371-8300
Located just outside of Denver International Airport, the Super 8 has the most affordable rooms in the area. Usually a park and fly deal is available to cover your parking needs at the airport for a room and parking combination, but this night I stayed, due to Spring Break, they barely had rooms available. Rooms are a bit small, but comfortable, and the staff is friendly. Stayed 3/20/06 for $65.35 Total price. Rated 3 stars out of 5.

To Botox, or Not to Botox?

Filed under: by Nancy at 11:06 pm

that is the question.

At least, that is the question a lot of boomers are now asking themselves.

Nowadays, there are more options than ever available to those who aren’t ready to ‘age gracefully’: plastic surgery can correct droopy eyelids, bumpy noses, thin lips, deep creases, bulging waistlines, sagging faces, and a whole host of other perceived aesthetic flaws.

According to an article in the South Dakota-based newspaper Argus Leader, “The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery says the number of cosmetic surgeries has increased more than 200 percent since 1997.”

Plastic surgery is becoming more common for two reasons, in my opinion. First, it’s more acceptable today than it was a decade ago. Second, it has become more affordable as well — both in terms of lower prices and in terms of credit and loan programs that have been introduced to make payment easier for those who can’t afford the lump sum.

Boomers can expect to live longer than any of the generations that came before them. They’re also much more focused on being healthy and youthful-looking than any preceding generation. These two factors combined — plus the increased availability, acceptability and affordability of cosmetic procedures — might mean that Botox and facelifts will soon be the norm for the newly retired.

Thinking about dating?

Filed under: by Nancy at 4:43 pm

If you’re retired and single, why not jump back into the dating scene?

According to a recent AARP survey, “70 percent of single baby boomers are actively dating.”

Hesitant? Consider these points, true for many boomers:

  • The kids have moved out
  • The bills are paid off
  • There are no worries about pregnancy
  • Your confidence has grown as you’ve matured
  • You’re ready and willing to focus on a relationship (without fretting over where that relationship is headed)

So let’s say you’ve decided to give it a go. Where do you start?

You could meet others the old-fashioned ways — via clubs, parties, church, or friends.

But don’t be afraid to try newer dating methods. According to an article in The Arizona Republic, older Americans “have taken a cue from young urban singles and are flocking to speed-dating events and online personals sites.”

Here are a few senior-oriented personals sites to start you off…
